With closed eyes, I use my hands in a bilateral process to fill each canvas with blue oil paint mixed with sun drenched linseed oil. My energy dictates its direction and the painting emerges. I allow each painting to become itself, similarly to the process of psychoanalysis whereas the analysand can become herself, often for the first time. The figures are hand cut symbolizing the swimming, sinking, drowning, dancing blue spirits that appear on the surface like bioluminescent magic.

Am I Alive? is a series of drawings and paintings that explore the abstraction of the body through illness and death. In tracking my mother’s cancer journey through my own drawing practice, I was able to confront my grief process, attachment style, and identity which are central themes that inform this body of work.
